As a portrait photographer here in Lebanon, NH, I do enjoy creating digital mixed media works out of my portraits, using my own photographs of botanicals (and moths and butterflies as well, in this case). I was working on this one for AWHILE in 2023. I kept reworking it and reworking it. I had an earlier incarnation printed and I felt like it needed to be worked more. I am finally really happy with the results. I incorporated several moth and butterfly species (including Morpho epistrophus, Idea blanchardii, and Papilionidae) into this portrait of Ke’ala. As well as a monarch butterfly caterpillar (Danaus plexippus).
I feel like change and new beginnings is really appropriate for a post in the midst of winter here in New Hampshire.
What I’ve done here is start with a portrait of one of my clients. Then I took multiple images I have taken from nature – mostly botanicals and in this case moths and butterflies as well. And I layered them all together in Photoshop, manipulating the layer properties of each one. I really love working with fleeting elements from nature and various botanicals that I have photographed to put together a multi-exposure piece incorporating many photographs I have taken.
